Farhana Hussain, Volunteer Co-ordinator

Early Start Group Volunteering Farhana Head ShotFarhana commenced her career in Newham with Early Start in 2005, as part of the Children Centre Health Team.  She supported the specialist providers, delivering service across Newham,  managing and providing the data returns and contact outcomes to the teams.  Farhana’s main area of responsibility was providing front line and back office support to the two mental health teams within the service.  Dealing with referrers and individuals in crisis to signpost them to appropriate interventions.

Farhana furthered her career in Health Project Delivery, Children's Centre Leadership and most recently leading a team of front line practitioners delivering Play and Communication and Family Support services to families living in the Stratford and West Ham Community Neighbourhood of Newham.

Farhana brings an array of experience, knowledge and skills to her role as the Early Start Volunteer Co-ordinator. She is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the volunteering programme and is working to ensure all aspects of the scheme are accredited.

Enhancing her practical experience’s through a range of training courses, such as Safeguarding, Health & Safety at Work, Presentation Skills, Bespoke Play and Communication Workshops to name a few. Farhana has recently gained qualification in Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

Farhana values the skills and experience volunteers bring to early years provision and their local community. She is committed to ensuring each of our volunteers are well supported and receive all the relevant training to enable them develop.

Pippa Alabaster, Programme Director

Pippa started her career working in adult education in Waltham Forest before moving over to Newham Children’s Services in 2000. She has 24 years experience of working in East London, as a frontline practitioner and services manager, over which time she has developed a  breadth of knowledge and experience across family support, parenting, community health and Children's Centre leadership. 

Pippa regards her main area of expertise as project commissioning and contract management. She has successfully implemented several major projects including the commissioning and contract management of health service contracts to the value of £3 million per annum. Pippa is passionate about health equality, early intervention, and forming strong partnerships to deliver services that achieve real and significant outcomes for children and families. Within Early Start, Pippa leads on the delivery of our commissioned peripatetic play and communication service, our volunteer scheme and learning service. To enhance this role, she has recently completed a Level three Award in Education & Training along with becoming a Certified First Aid Instructor and is now looking to develop our Volunteer Scheme as an accredited programme of learning.

Sue Brown, Senior Practitioner Learning & Development

Sue has worked in Newham Children Centre's for the last 13 years,  she  has  a wealth of experience, in supporting  vulnerable families,  within a multi-disciplinary team. Sue has successfully managed a Children’s Centre for seven years; co-ordinating high quality services across the community for children and families. Sue’s  has developed and co-ordinated play and parenting services, providing stimulating environments for children and families, particularly those with special and sensory needs. 

Sue has delivered a range of training packages to families, volunteers and peers. She is a qualified Baby Massage instructor and has taught parents baby massage techniques throughout her career  and is passionate about the benefits of massage; particularly the positive impact it has on the brain development of young children.
