VE Day Celebrations

VE Day dawns on Friday 8th May, marking 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe.

To commemorate this historic moment the parenting team have planned activities and events to enable you to join in on the celebrations safely from your own home.

Make bunting

Cut out equal sized triangles from red, white and blue paper and attached to a piece of string using cellotape.  Display the bunting around your home, both indoors and out!

Bake a Victoria sponge cake

This is the perfect celebration cake and easy to do with the children, you can follow the recipe here.

Observe 2 minute silence

A two-minute silence will be held on the day at 11am and a broadcast of Winston Churchill’s victory speech will be aired in the afternoon.

Online get together

Celebrate with your friends/colleagues/family using the numerous video platforms available; zoom, what’s app and house party to name but a few.  You could plan a VE quiz or bingo party to keep everyone engaged and entertained.

Join the national sing-a long

Join the national singalong led by Dame Vera Lynn a former Newham resident and war time heroine to the wartime Anthem “We’ll Meet Again”.  The singalong is scheduled to take place on Friday 8th May just after 9pm following the Queens special address to the nation, which will be shown on BBC One.

Song lyrics

We’ll again
Don’t know where
Don’t know when
But I know we’ll meet again
Some sunny day

Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
‘Till the blue skies chase
Those dark clouds far away

And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won’t be long
They’ll be happy to know
That, as I saw you go
You were singing this song

We’ll meet again
Don’t know where
Don’t know when
But I know we’ll meet again
Some sunny day

And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won’t be long
They’ll be happy to know
That, as I saw you go
You were singing this song

We’ll meet again
Don’t know where
Don’t know when
But I know we’ll meet again
Some sunny day

Please share with us pictures of your celebrations!
