Play Dough Recipes and Activities

During these long winter nights it is a good idea to plan some fun indoor activities with your children.  A firm favourite is play dough, guaranteed to keep your children busy, helps them to be imaginative, encourages creativity and prevents them from getting bored and into trouble!

Here are two simple recipes, one which requires no cooking and is great to do together with your child, the other is a cooked recipe which has the added advantage of lasting longer than the uncooked recipe.

Uncooked playdough:

  • 1 cup of plain flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tsp of food colouring of choice

Mix the dry ingredients together in the bowl; add the food colouring to the cup of water. Gradually mix the liquid with the dry ingredients until you get the desired consistency.  Keep in a plastic bag and refrigerate after use.

Cooked playdough

  • 1 cup of plain flour
  • 1 tbsp of oil
  • ½ cup of salt
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tsp of food colouring of choice
  • 2 tsp of cream of tartar

Pour dry ingredients together in saucepan, add oil and combine food colouring and water.

Whisk initially over a medium heat to smooth out any lumps, then stir continuously with a spoon until it becomes a thick blob.  Allow to cool before use.  Keep in a plastic bag and refrigerate after use.

Activity ideas:

  • Roll playdough into a long thin sausage shape that can be turned into a snake or roll up for a snail.
  • Add sand to the dough for a different texture and use shells to create a beach theme
  • Use googly eyes and feathers to make playdough monsters
  • Stick candles in the dough to make birthday cakes
  • Poke in cocktail sticks to make hedgehogs
  • Use beads and pipe cleaners to make robots
  • Kitchen utensils from around your home are great for opening up your own bakery
  • Collect leaves and flowers from outside and use them to make prints in the dough
  • Use lollypop sticks to make your own colourful ice-pops
  • Add glitter to dark dough for space themed play
